Gęsia Szyja
1489 m ; 29/12/2007

Since Ždiar where we stay is not too far from the Polish border, and that contrary to Slovakia, all trails are opened in winter there, we had the idea to go to Łysa Polana for a short hike. I had heard of Rusinowa Polana as an interesting place several times before, and we absolutely wanted to avoid the vetch crowd of Morskie Oko. We are decided, we are going to Gęsia Szyja. This "summit", if we can call it like this, reserves in fact a much nicer surprise than what we can expect first...

At the start of the valley Dolina Rybiego Potoku, at Łysa Polana, which leads to the very famous Morskie Oko. But we are not going to follow this route, we turn straight towards the blue trail just after the barrier of entrance in the parc, to head in the direction of Rusinowa Polana.
Climbing to Rusinowa Polana, splendid panorama (despite against the sun...) to the end of the valley Bielovodská Dolina.
The valley Bielovodská Dolina, probably the most majestuous valley in the whole Carpathians, as seen from a clearing a bit higher.

The climb is steep, the melting snow that covers the cobbled trail doesn't really help...

Arriving to the junction with the black trail...
... Peu avant Rusinowa Polana.
A bit before Rusinowa Polana.
Splendid wide meadow. The dome in the middle is the beginning to the climb to Gęsia Szyja, from where few ones came back by the quickest method...

Petite cabane d'estive.
Small pastoral hut.
Superb mountainous atmosphere in this place, I must say...
... With a breathtaking panorama, certainly one of the collections of peaks amongst the richest we can observe in the whole Tatras.

Another pastoral hut, a "Bacówka", which means a place where one produces milk, cheeses...

Few other huts around, and examining the panorama during a break.
Début de la montée sur Gęsia Szyja.
The beginning of the climb to Gęsia Szyja.

The crest gets narrower, and continues in the forest for a short while.

On the final part, some striking rocks, before it ends like a cape, just like if it was made to make us feel reaching for real some high summit.
The panorama offered by Gęsia Szyja, at first sight a debonair summit, is actually really worth going.

Ľadový štít, the 3rd highest summit in the Tatras, but certainly the most impressive as seen from the Northern side and from Poland. On the right, zoom to Muran, Havran, and the White Tatras.
Gęsia Szyja also opens the view to the West, which, despite not as spectacular, allows observing Kasprowy Wierch and its cable-car, Czerwony Wierch all round-shaped, and Giewont the double-jagged.
Far, in the North, in the end of the plain, Babia Góra in the Beskides. On the right, zoom to Giewont.
