Le Pays Basque est une région située sur la frontière Franco-Espagnole, à l'Ouest des Pyrenées sur l'Océan Atlantique. Il est appellé ainsi, car il a gardé de nombreuses coutumes et traditions du passé, heritées en partie de la jadis hostilité de ses deux trop grands empires voisins. Cette unité se justifie également par l'uniformité du pays, mêlant des deux côtés océan et montagne. Cette combinaison fait l'attrait d'une région française encore peu connue de la majorité des étrangers malgré un tourisme croissant, et qui n'a rien a envier à la Côte d'Azur ni même la Californie.
Voici une petite visite guidée des quelques endroits que je connais le mieux.

The Bask Country is a region located on the border of France and Spain, in the Western Pyrenees on the Atlantic Ocean. It's called like this because it has kept numerous customs and traditions from the past, inherited in part from the legendary hostility of its two too larges neighbouring empires.This unity is also justified by the uniformity of the land, mixing in the two sides ocean and mountains. This combination makes the beauty of a French region still not well known of the majority of the strangers, despite a rising tourism, and that has no reason to be jealous for with the "Cote d'Azur" neither California.
Here is a small commented visit of few places I'm used to know the most.
La Campagne Basque - The Bask Countryside

Espelette


Espelette, a 30 km d'Hendaye et Biarritz, dans les collines, est un village sympathique ou l'on produit du chocolat et surtout du piment excellent. Au moi de Juin, ces pieds de piment sechent pendus sur les murs blancs de toutes les maisons, donnant au village un charme tres savoureux.
Espelette, 30 km far from Hendaye et Biarritz, in the hills, is a lovely village where is produced chocolate, and above all excellent Chili Pepper. In the month of June, these plants of CHili Pepper are drying on the white walls of all the houses, giving a tasty charm to the town.
Saint Jean Pied-De-Port

Saint Jean Pied-De-Port est un autre village, enclave entre deux montagnes au coeur des Pyrenees profondes. La forteresse de Vauban qui trone au sommet, d'ou la vue est imprenable, est la principale attraction.Ce petit pont enjambant la riviere Nivelle est d'un romantique absolu... Mais il y a aussi ce petit dedale de rues pietonnes pavees plein de commerces et restaurants, qui font de ce village, reste simple et typique, mon endroit favori du Pays Basque.


Saint Jean Pied-De-Port is another village, locked between two mountains in the heart of the deep Pyrenees. The castle of Vauban lying on the top, where the view is brilliant, is the main attraction.This wee bridge crossing the river Nivelle is an absolute romantical... But there is also this small maze of pedestrian paved streets full of shops and restaurants, that make this town stayed simple and typical, my favourite place in the Bask Country.
Les sports basques - The Bask sports


Les basques sont connus pour etre, tout dans l'esprit la "vache Landaise", de valeureux sportifs aimant faire preuve de leur talent. Ci dessus a gauche, epreuve de force a la corde. A droite,la Pelote Basque, sorte de Squash qui se joue avec la Chistera, panier recourbe permettant de propulser la balle a 100 km/h !
The Bask people are famous to be, all in the spirit of the "Landaise Cow", some very good sportsmen enjoying proving their talent. Above on the left, event of strength on the rope. On the right,the "Bask Pelote", sort of Squash played with the "Chistera", a curved basket allowing to propolse the ball at 100 km/h !
A gauche, courses de trainieres, sorte de barques a 16 avirons. Enfin, n'oublions pas que la Cote Basque regorge de spots pour le surf, que les chevronnes de passage n'hesitent pas a comparer a l'Australie !
On the left, races of "trainiers", sort of boats with 16 oars. Finally, don't forget that the Bask Coast overflow of spots for surf, that some foreign experts don't hesitate to compare with Australia !

Mont Jaikzabel


C'est dans les hauteurs d'Irun, homologue Espagnole d'Hendaye, que commence l'un des morceaux du littoral Basque des plus sauvages, le Mont Jaikzabel.
It is at heights of Irun, Spannish counterpart of Hendaye that begins one of the wildest parts of the Basque coast, the Jaikzabel Hill.

Cet ultime contrefort des Pyrénées tombe à 45° dans l'océan, un peu à la manière de Socoa, mais sur des kilomètres et à une hauteur avoisinant les 500m. Sa route de crête est un mythe pour les cyclistes, et un point de vue exceptionnel sur la baie d'Hendaye-irun, et ce qu'on peut appeller le commencement des Pyrénées. Malgré abrupt, il présente sur son versant maritime quelques randonnées attrayantes, que je n'ai pas encore eu le loisir d'expérimenter. Au Sud, il cède la place à la baie d'une autre ville célèbre...

This ultime swell of the Pyrénées falls at 45° into the ocean, a bit the same way than Socoa, but along many kilometers and at a height near 500m. Its crest road is a myth for the cycler, and a fine viewpoint to the Irun-San Sebastian bay, and what we can call the beginning of the Pyrénées. Despite steep, its presents on its sea side few attracting walks, which I haven't got the leisure to experiment yet. Southsides, it gives way to the bay of another famous town...
San Sebastian


San Sebastian se trouve du côté Espagnol, et est généralement considérée comme la capitale du Pays Basque. Si la vieille ville au centre est demeurée très typique et animée, de vilains buildings se voulant modernes sont un peu venus gâcher les bords des deux plages. Entre ces deux-ci, il y a une sorte de péninsule terminée par une colline d'où la statue du Saint veille sur la ville, tel le Pain de Sucre de Rio. Constituant un point stratégique de défense, elle a été dotée au cours des siècles de canons d'ages variés. On peut grimper facilement et la promenade est agréable. Tandis que le côté océan a un parfum Mediterranéen, le côté ville offre une belle vue de la ville et des Pyrénées Espagnoles.

San Sebastian is located on the Spannish side, and is generally considered as the capital of the Bask Country. If the old town in the centre has stayed very typical and animated, some ugly buildings supposed moderns have spoiled a bit the border of the two beaches. Between those, there is a sort of peninsula finished by a hill from where the statue of the Saint is surveying the city, like the Rock of Rio. Constituting a strategic defence point, it has been equipped aong the centuries with cannons of various ages. We can climb it easily and the walk is very nice. As the ocean side has got a Mediteranean parfume, the city side offers a beautiful view of the town and the Spannish Pyrenees.
