Velika Planina
1666 m ; 05/08/07

Here is « Velika Planina », the « wide meadow », a famous place in the Slovenian Alps, but especially by the the Slovenians themselves. This is an immense village of pasture made of huts all of them in wood. Most of them are not anymore in activity and became private properties for the lucky ones, sometimes with all the comfort (sauna, etc). But a fair number of them kept their initial function, and locals still grow cows, sheep, horses... It's also possible to buy directly cheese directly from the producer.

At the starting point downside the chairlift. Yes, we shortened a little bit the length of the ascent...

Panorama, arrivés en haut du téléphérique.
Panorama, at the top of the chairlift.

This is not the same mountain range than the Triglav (the « Julian Alps »), but the « Kamniške Alps », another Slovenian mountain range a little smaller and more in the East, whose hightest peak, Grintovec, tops still at 2568m. From a landscape point of view, they look quite the same, made of very white limestone, steep, and very deep valleys.
Far away, the rest of the very rugged Kamniške Alpe.
Permier aperçu de Velika Planina.
First sight of Velika Planina.

On the other hand, on the architectural point of view, the « Kamniške Alps » are rather different. These « UFOs » have a style on their own.
L'endroit est pour le moins plaisant.
A pleasing place for sure.
Un véritable village !
A real village !
Des maisonnettes en bois...
Little wooden houses...
Et encore des maisonnettes en bois...
Again and again...

That Sunday afternoon, a big folkloric festival took place, a stand with musicians stood up in the heart of the « village », players tuned some Slovenian folk music, a crowd was drinking and dancing, some handcraft shops around, etc...

In complete immersion in the Slovenian culture, this place seemed to give the heartbeats of a whole country.
Far away, the summit Ostrica, one of the hightst in the Kamniške Alps.
Endroit fascinant.
Fascinating place.

L'église est aussi là.
The church is also here.

Tout comme les vaches, ça et là.
As well as cows, here and there.
In the evening, we ate and slept in one of the three public mountain huts, Črnuški dom, located in the South end of this wide plateau, from where we overlook a wide part of the Slovenian bassin, and from where, at night, we could even distinguigh the lights of the capital Ljubljana
Mala Planina, the small, by opposition to Velika Planina, the big one.
Mala Planina, a bit more remote, is less touristic and more pastoral and "functional", more real pasture huts where people really work.

Fin d'après-midi. Rendez vous pour la suite !
