Voici un résumé en images de Glasgow, la ville ou j'ai résidé pendant un an de Septembre 98 a Août 99 dans le cadre de mes études à l'ENIT (voir page sur Tarbes), en tant qu'étudiant "ERASMUS". Subissant souvent injustement la comparaison d'un point de vue très "touristique" avec Edimbourg, la ville historique d'Ecosse et autre capitale, Glasgow est réputée pour être résolument industrielle et triste. Si ceci est tout a fait vrai pour les quartiers de la banlieue (comme toute autre ville d'ailleurs), le centre ville recèle pourtant de nombreuses choses intéressantes, et est anime par un dynamisme du en partie a la vie étudiante. Elue capitale de la culture en 92, qualifiée par un slogan désormais célèbre, "The Friendly City", et dorénavant capitale de l'architecture et du design, la ville n'a pas vole sa réputation. Nombreux sont les britanniques préférant la gentillesse et la simplicité des "Glaswegians" par rapport a l'orgueil des Edimbourgeois. Capitale avant tout de la tolérance, de nombreuses communautés ethniques y cohabitent sans trouble majeur, si ce n'est l'éternelle rivalité entre fans du "Celtic" et du "Rangers" (qui parait-il trouve la majorité de ses supporters en Irlande du Nord...). Ensuite, en levant un peu les yeux, on remarque une remarquable et fantaisiste association d'architectures modernes, celle du 3e millénaire avec celle des splendides buildings début du 20e siècle. Glasgow a grandi surtout lors de la révolution industrielle, et possède un certain look de ville américaine, avec ses avenues quadrillées en pente, et les escaliers de secours en ferraille parcourant les façades. Les nombreux musées tous gratuits, les immenses galeries marchandes des 3 avenues piétonnes, le marche aux puces du "Barras Market", en bref flâner dans les rues, sont les principaux attraits la ville. Enfin, Glasgow est une ville qui vit 24h sur 24. Quel dommage de ne pas sortir au moins une fois le soir, boire un coup dans un pub branché, puis récolter des "free pass" pour aller night-clubber gratuit! | Here is a short imaged summary of Glasgow, the city where I have lived during one year from September 98 to August 99 in the background of my studies in the ENIT (see page about Tarbes), as an "ERASMUS" student. Suffering often and unfairly the comparison from a very "touristic" point of view with Edinburgh, the historic city of Scotland and other capital, Glasgow is well known to be definitely industrial and sad. If this is totally true for the districts of the suburb (like every other town by the way), the city centre contains anyway a lot of interesting things, and is animated by a dynamism due in the most part to the students life. Elected capital of the culture in 92, qualified by the now famous slogan "The Friendly City", and since then capital of architecture and design, the city has not stolen its reputation. Numerous are the British people who prefer the kindness and the simplicity of the "Glaswegian" as compared of the pride of Edinburgh's people. Above all capital of tolerance, a lot of ethnic communities share their life without any major trouble, excepted the eternal rivalry between fans of "Celtic" and "Rangers" (which is finding the majority of its supporters in Northern Ireland...). Furthermore, by raising the eyes, we notice a remarkable and fantasist association of modern architectures, the one of the third millennium with the one of splendid buildings from the early 20th century. Glasgow has grown the most part during the industrial revolution, and has got a certain look of American city, with its grid shaped avenues on slope, and the security stairs in rusty iron covering the facades. The numerous museums are free, the immense shopping centres of the 3 pedestrian avenues, second hand "Barras Market", in brief strolling in the streets, are the main attracts of the city. Finally, Glasgow is a city who lives 24h out of 24. What a pity not to go out at least once in the evening, have a drink in a plugged pub, then get some free pass in order to go nightclubbing for cheap! |

Il fallait que j'en prenne au moins un en photo... Ils ne sont pas chers mais leurs chauffeurs parlent generallement un ecossais incomprehensible ! I had to take a picture of one at least... They are cheap, but their drivers are usually talking into a very uncomprehensible scottish accent ! |

Le pub "The Babbity Bowster" dans la Merchant City, et le véhicule de son capitaine. Un très bon endroit, avec terrain de pétanque (si, si !) et Scottish country music assurée par un groupe de violonistes les Jeudi et Samedi soirs. Publicité oblige, car c'est là que j'ai fait le barbecue tout l'été 99 !
