Zakopane est un peu ce que Luchon est à la Haute Garonne. Les Tatras Polonaises ne sont qu'une timide avancée, et Zakopane au centre de ce petit morceau. La fièvre immobilière étend ses tentacules à travers tout le piémont et le début des vallées, à grands renforts de grues. Mecque nationale des sports d'hiver, elle compte jusqu'à 250000 habitants lors des pics saisonniers. Autrefois village typique, entièrement construite en bois, on lui reproche un peu à présent d'être un grand parc d'attractions, une vulgarisation du folklore montagnard. Mais elle comporte encore quelques quartiers typiques, notamment autour du cimetière. Son artère principale, la rue Krupówki, est une sorte de Marrakech, regorgeant de pubs, fast-foods, souvenirs, jonchée de stands de friandises, noire de monde, le tout dans un joyeux désordre. Le soir, danseurs, musiciens et autres attractions prennent le relais.
Zakopane is a bit what Ben Nevis is to Scotland. Polish Tatras are only a small part of the massif, and Zakopane in the center of this little place.
